a)      What have you learned about the processes of designing a sound research study in class?

This class has been very helpful in opening my eyes to the different kinds of research that are possible. For example, I didn’t know what it meant to conduct a literature review, or what it meant to do a rhetorical analysis. It was interesting to learn about how the method of usability, survey, interview, etc. all intersect with one another. I enjoyed the fact that a research proposal can evolve from a literature review without having to start over from square one. What was required was envisioning the literature review in a larger perspective, and figure out what would best serve my chosen topic.

b)     What have these processes taught you about your future roles as a technical/professional communicator and digital rhetoric?

If I had to narrow down the various aspects of this process, I would say that the most valuable lesson I learned is the idea of eating an elephant: when envisioning the whole thing, a research proposal sounds alarming and too time consuming, BUT if I work on each piece a bite at a time, eventually I will have a solid proposal. I also learned that sometimes it is necessary to be flexible with how the research process happens, and take the topic where the research directs, even if it wasn't initially in my plan.

  1. Hello Adell, I love your comments in relation to the different kinds of research that are possible. I too felt like that was the best clarification I have received yet to date in my academic studies. Learning about the different research methods was very interesting and a useful skill.

I also love your elephant analogy! I too felt like it was an overwhelming assignment, but taken in bits and pieces, it is doable. To have Dr. Bacabac's assignment sheet and personal Zoom calls helped tremendously to pull the project together. I'm feeling very grateful for such good help!

It was a pleasure working / interacting with you this semester! :)

    Blessings, Rachel

  3. I can definitely relate to the idea of eating an elephant! I feel like that almost every time a big assignment is given to me, and I find it easy only when I plan! I like that you make a point of being flexible when necessary, maybe next time I will do this.
